Kathmandu -Island Peak

Starting with a super short flight to reach Lukla town and then heading past many nice cultural villages of Sherpa, the tribe of Khumbu and Everest region where you can witness the native immense cultures of great interest. As the trek continues to pass the famous Namche Bazaar and up to scenic view spot at beautiful Thyangboche and its impressive monastery situated in the midst of the alpine forest and snow-capped mountains facing Everest and Amadablam. Thyangboche onward where tree lines and green vegetation drops to the sheer wilderness on reaching at wide and wonderful Imjatse valley walking past Dingboche and Chukung settlement to begin our adventure with climb of famous and popular Island Peak, also known as Imjatse Himal due to its location. Island peak to Mera Peak Via Amuphu Labsta- La Pass

The first major highlight of the adventure where the journey continues walking on moraine and ice with glaciers to reach above Amuphu Labsta-La Pass at a 5,845 m high, where climb leads to complete wilderness away from main trails and human settlement. Traversing over one of the highest pass within Himalaya and Everest region then walk into Hongu valley close to Baruntse and Seto Pokhari (glacial ponds), Our route diverts towards west crossing over Mera-la to reach at Mera Peak base camp within Inkhu valley.

Setting base and high camps to make the ascent much possible and then with enough exercise and practice to conquer finally at Mera Peak summit at 6,461 m / 21,192ft, one of the highest trekking peaks of Nepal Himalaya. The glorious climb of Mera Peak of the less technical summit but leads to strenuous long climb with safe descend to carry on our journey back to Lukla walking within beautiful and scenic Inkhu valley laden with green forest and over Kalo and Naulekh Himal to reach Lukla.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Fly to Lukla 2,840 m from Kathmandu and trek to Phakding (2,612 m / 8,570 ft)- 03/ 04 hrs.

Morning at the provided time for flight to Lukla and then transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport, where short scenic flight takes you at Lukla, facing views of Himalayan range of peaks with Everest during 35 mins flight. At Lukla, with time for brief refreshment start walk to Phakding for overnight stop, first day of gentle walk with few short ups and downs past many nice Sherpa farm villages with interesting prayer monument as walk leads to Phakding.

Day 02: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,287 ft) via Sagarmatha National park entrance post- 06/07 hrs.

After Phakding morning walk starts on gradual trail to reach the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, where you collect information of Khumbu area. From here walk on river valley within green forest then last final climb of the day to reach at famous Namche Bazaar a large village and a town as well the hub of Khumbu Sherpa people.

Day 03: Acclimatization (rest) day in Namche Bazaar.

A leisure and rest day at Namche Bazaar explore its nice places to view point overlooking views of Everest, Nuptse-Lhotse and Amadablam with range of adjoining peaks. At Namche one can enjoy visiting park museum where you get information of
Khumbu Sherpa, landscapes, flora and fauna and mountaineering history of Khumbu Himal area. Nice place for rest day on high altitude to support with acclimatization precaution from high altitude symptoms or AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) where walking high and sleeping low the best way to get acclimatize.

Day 04: Trek to Thyangboche Monastery (3,860 m /12,665 ft)- 05/ 06 hrs.

From Namche on scenic wide path within tree lines and views of Everest with adjoining peaks on walks to Thyangboche, where walk leads downhill to a river Imjatse and then uphill climb for few hours within cool shade of alpine woodland of rhododendron-oaks and pines trees as walk reaches a beautiful spot at Thyangboche Monastery for overnight stop, with time to visit its interesting monastery surrounded by range of peaks with Everest and close views of Amadablam.

Day 05: Trek to Dingboche (4,410 m/14,468 ft) - 04/ 05 hrs.

Enjoy morning views of mountains with Everest and Amadablam, and then descend to a river to cross a strong steel bridge where gradual climb takes you at  Pangboche village facing views of majestic Amadablam. From Pangboche onwards tree lines disappears for shorter alpine bush of juniper and Burberry, walk leads further east to Dingboche for overnight stop, located within scenic Imjatse valley, at Dingboche enjoy views of Island peak and North Face of Amadablam.

Day 06: Acclimatization (rest) day in Dingboche, hike to NangkarTshng (5,616 m/18416 ft) - 06/07 hrs.

Another necessary rest day for acclimatization at Dingboche, hike up to Nangkar Tshng hill to support acclimatization with high altitude and thin air, facing grand panorama of peaks as far to Makalu with great views of Imjatse valley and Island peak, afternoon relax with preparation for next day walk and climb of Island Peak.

Day: 07-Trek to Chhukung (4,730 m/15,518 ft) - 03/ 04 hrs.

An easy and gradual short walk of the day where our route leads further east to reach a small and last settlement at Chukung, where altitude gains gradually to Chhukung for lunch and overnight stop facing views of Island peak, Lhotse, Amadablam and Imja glacier, Chhukhung the last settlement around east of Khumbu with Imjatse Valley.

Day 08:  Day trip climb Chhukung-Ri at (5,550 m/ 18,204 ft) and back- 05/06 hrs. 

Enjoy a rest day at Chhukung with last overnight in the comfort of a lodge from here onward in tents with camping facilities till Lukla.
At Chhukung take a hike to gain more heights on top Chhukung-Ri hill top rewards you with spectacular panorama of mountains and close to Lhotse and Lhotse Shar mountain facing full views of Island Peak / Imjatse Himal towards south direction.

Day 09: Trek to Island Peak Base Camp (5,200 m/17,060 ft)- 03/04 hrs.

After overnight and time at Chukung morning walk leads to Parsya Gyab within Island Peak Base Camp, walk heads to a steep climb and crossing over moraine of Lhotse glacier and then following a stream towards a snout of Imja glacier within a dry pond of Lhotse and Imja glaciers at the base camp and Pareshaya Gyab area. Afternoon can relax or short walks as well practice climb, as well  checking route of the climb with preparation for Island Peak climb, check climbing equipment and getting ready for the climb next early morning before break of dawn, rest of the day engage with climbing training on ice and rocky walls at base camp.

Day 10: Climb Island Peak (6,189 m/20,305 ft) walk to ImjaTsho (5,010 m) - 10 hrs.

After enough exercise and practice with acclimatization day at base camp, where our adventure starts at early morning as climb leads across glacier where one needs to be careful in avoiding crevasses, as climb takes you straight north over snow covered scree in-between a glacier to the top ridge. A tour climb over rocks and icefall section, a steep snow and ice ramp takes you at about 100 meters (300ft) to the summit top where our first adventure completes for an hour before heading descend. From the top enjoy views, after a great memorable experience of a life time with great successful climb on top Island Peak lokking views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Amadablam and Makalu 8,463 includes Chamlang and Baruntse peaks. After a great and exciting climb make descend on the same route towards Imjatse Tsho a small glacial pond to set camp for our climb towards Amphu Labtsa-La pass.

Day 11: Cross Amuphu Labsta-la Pass at (5,845 m) and descend to Amphu base (5,512 m/ 18,080 ft) - 09/10 hrs.

Start early morning on clearing the camp site where climb leads on scree, moraine and ice with vertical climb on main ropes to reach the top of Amphu Labtsa-La Pass facing outstanding views of mountains. From the top descend with care on ropes to reach at the other side of Amphu base near towards Seto Pokhari (a glacial Pond) to set camping for overnight.

Day 12: Trek to Seto Pokhari (5,035 m/17,503 ft) -05/ 06 hrs.  

After a tough climb and descend of previous day, a slow and easy walk but on high elevation to reach at another scenic spot at Seto Pokhari around Hongu valley area and close to Baruntse Himal and Makalu routes.

Day 13: Trek to Kongme Dingma (4,850 m/15,908 ft)-04/ 05 hrs.

On leaving Hongu valley and Seto Pokhara where route leads to cross over high Mera-La pass at above 5.340 m to reach within Inkhu valley enclosed by high mountains with stunning Mera Peak. Slowly walk leads to other side of Mera La pass to establish our overnight camp at Kongme Dingma in complete isolation of mountains.

Day 14: Climb to High Camp (5,800 m/ 19,024 ft) - 06/07 hrs.

From Kongma Dingma as well the base camp, where morning climb leads to add one camp to make the climb more easier walk follows to reach at Mera High Camp in sheer wilderness of ice and glaciers. On reaching high camp with time for preparation for next early morning climb on top Mera Peak, our expert guide will check the route of the climb and fix ropes where necessary to safe guard from incidental accidents.

Day 15: Climb Mera peak (6,461 m/ 21,192 ft) and to Khare (5,025 m) - 9/10 hrs. 

Another Big Day of the adventure, rising early for the climb ahead of dawn, route leads to steep climb but with less technical difficulty, as Mera Peak climb a straight-forward one can use ski poles all the way to the top, however for safety measures where all climbers needs to be well equipped with crampons, ice axe, helmets. After a tough high altitude climb then finally reaching on top of the rewards you with outstanding panorama of Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Cho- Oyu all the way to Mt. Kanchenjunga in the eastern horizon. Enjoying marvelous moments feeling in high spirit, then descend on the same route to base camp at Khare.

Day 16:Trek to Thangnak (4,358m/14,295 ft) -06/07 hrs. 

After a great effort and enjoyable climb on top Mera one of the highest trekking peaks of Nepal, from the base of Mera Peak walk towards west over glacier and moraine to reach a small lake called Charpatte Tal (a four square Lake). From here descend towards a grassy field to reach at human settlement at Thangnak for overnight camp, a place with few simple lodge and Tea-House at present.

Day 17: Trek to Thuli-Kharka (4,300 m/ 14,104 ft) - 06/07 hrs.

From here walking within scenic Inkhu valley and back into green vegetation and lovely forest of birch-rhododendron-oaks and pines trees as walk leads on gradual path with few short ups and down to reach nice grassy field at Thuli-Kharka for last overnights in tents before Lukla.

Day 18: Trek to Lukla (2,840 m/ 9,319 ft) - 06/07 hrs.

Being in complete wilderness for over week duration where today walk leads into civilization at Lukla town, as climb takes you to cross Naulekh and Kalo-Himal and over Zatwar-la pass with long steep descend to Chutanga within forested area. From Chuntanga on easy gradual walks to reach at Lukla for last overnight stop around Everest and Khumbu area in the comfort of a nice cozy lodge.

Day 19: Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel and end of the adventure

Morning as flight time for Kathmandu short walk to Tenzing and Hillary airport of Lukla, as plane reaches Lukla airport and then board in small aircraft for sweeping scenic flight back to Kathmandu.

On landing at Kathmandu airport transfer back to your hotel with grand memories and adventure on Island and Mera Peaks climb via Amphu Labtsa-La Pass.

Day  20: Reserve Day for Contingency 

Reserve this day as spare and contingency in case of flight delay in Lukla due to bad weather conditions, as well to adjust our standard itinerary days from the climb of Island and Mera Peak, if it comes to delay. If all goes well with the weather and the itinerary days enjoy the free day for individual activities or join in for interesting tour around Kathmandu-Patan and Bhaktapur.

Sherpa guide are very knowledgeable about climbing. On the to High Camp my friend was sick by AMS. But Our guide Kaji take care him and drink garlic soup then His headache/sickness was done. Food and tea house condition:

Meals served in Tea-House and local lodge are of standard quality were for smaller groups can choose from the menu provided by the lodge, for bigger groups of more than 6 person where set meals will be fixed, this allows saving time and fuel of the lodge/country. Meals include from typical Nepalese Dal / Bhat with lentil soup and seasonal vegetables, Sherpa / Chinese / Indian dishes to Continental meals where you will be surprised with the food list on the menu for the mountainous country can offer some of your homely delights like fresh bakeries cakes, pie, and bread. All foods served are healthy and hygienic that is why lodge trekking is more popular in Everest and another Himalayan area of Nepal.

Transportation and communication:

On this trek and climb where local transportation will be in car / coach or tourist class bus as per group size that is to ferry you to domestic airport and back to your hotel in Kathmandu. Other means of transportation is taking a short scenic flight in a small aircraft to land in Lukla and to get back at Kathmandu using Dornier / Twin Otter or similar plane which is suitable for mountainous country like Nepal. As for communication at present most of places do have assists to local and overseas call, where cell-phone (mobile) available in every lodge and local places
and catch transmission wide world, but in some cases like bad weather and in the hidden corner of hills and valley where communication can be disturbed. During overnight stop in villages and lodge do have facilities to charge your camera-laptop or cell phone at extra cost, beyond villages and settlement where you will be away from electricity or solar power.

Island peak and Mera peak Climbing via Amphu Labtsa-La Pass Difficulties???

Island peak a straight forward mountain to climb with some technical skill to encounter to reach the summit top, we have set the grade of the climb as PD + which means ‘Per Difficule’ a  peak with accessible climbing route with few technical side to face. Where all climbers requires full climbing gear where main and fix ropes required for the ascent and safe descent. As for Mera Peak although one of the highest trekking peaks of Nepal higher than Island Peak, but a straight-forward climb of less technical effort to reach the summit top. The climb leads to strenuous steep slopes on ice and snow all the way to the top, where all climbers needs adequate climbing equipment for safe and successful climb and descend. The grade of Mera Peak Climb is just ‘F’ means “Facial Easy” grading comes from French and Swiss Alpine Climbing System, where Mera Peak a climb of least technical difficulty. As for crossing Amphu-Labtsa-La Pass which is almost similar to some peak climbing, where fix and main ropes needed as well trekkers and staff all requires crampons to traverse this tough high pass, where descend is more steep than the climb for safe descend ropes is fixed.

How many nights in tented camp during Island Peak and Mera peak and crossing of Aphu-Labtsa Trek?

06 / 07 Days (Six Nights and Seven Days till morning), during an overnight in tents all camping facilities provided with the separate unit of the kitchen with cooks, kitchen staff, guide, and strong healthy porters. Includes two-men tents with soft small mattress (inflatable or foam), dining tent as per group size, kitchen tent for cooking on kerosene or LPG stoves provide you with toilet tents with dug-out hole, in some cases we also issue shower/bathing tents.

Do I need climbing experience for Island peak and Mera peak Climbing crossing Amphu-Labtsa-La Pass Trek?

Actually climbing experience is not necessary but will be good for your own technical requirement, where our guide will instructs and teaches you the technique of climb and using equipments, where some days on rest where you can train with our expert guide. On Island Peak where our guide will make necessary arrangement fixing ropes and making ledges for climber to set foot as well using snow-bar and ice screws in some difficult section of the climb. As for Mera Peak which a climb of less technical difficulty but leads you to strong strenuous climb on ice and snow where ropes will be fixed sometimes for safe descend. Amphu Labtsa-La Pass one of the highest ridge to cross where few sections lead almost to a peak climb, however, our expert guides will maintained the route on both sides of the climb and descend with fix ropes on necessary sections where all members and staff requires crampons and ice-ax for safe traverse from one side to another.

What types of equipment/gears do I need for Island peak and Mera peak climbing via Amphu-Labtsa La Pass Trek?

For Island and Mera Peaks climb and to cross over Amphu Labtsa-La pass, where all climbers require adequate and good climbing gears/equipment on both peaks as well for Amphu Labtsa Pass Treks with warm sleeping bags that can withstand minimum - 20° Celsius. Can I climb solo to Island peak and Mera peak climbing and cross Amphu-Labtsa La pass treks without guide/porters?

It is not possible where all interested climbers and trekkers for this hard and tough adventure needs to join with proper Government Registered Company like White Hill Adventure, where you will be accompanied and guided by licensed and authorized guides, as this is a challenging adventure with climb and crossing high pass.  Where all staff and porters are well insured against accidents and illness where White Hill Adventure issue insurance of guides and porters on all our treks and climb.

If I might catch altitude sickness problem what happens?

It is not normal on high altitude treks and climb people do get minor symptoms of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), for mild one can take medication like aspirin or Diamox (as recommended dose and time by your doctors). For severe AMS one has to drop down to safe area till you get well to continue the journey, where we will provide our staff to look after you or you can break the journey and return back to Kathmandu and check into hospital. Where all clients requires Travel and Medical Insurance to claim the money used on medical ground or cancel the trip bad weather conditions wise. On most of high altitude treks and climb company issues medical kit, portable oxygen and Gamma Bags / Pressure bags for clients and staff safety and pre-caution.
