Travelling certainly is not just about walking and wandering but equally about sleeping and eating.

Accommodation options

In Nepal, the types of accommodation options available to anyone visiting its lands can be broadly divided into the following.

Resorts, Hotels, and Hostels

Mainly in or around the main cities, the options range from resorts and hotels to hostels. Depending largely on one’s preferences and circumstances, a visitor can choose to stay in a luxurious five-star resort or a moderate hotelwhere room prices fall somewhere between $ 20 and $50. While there are also hotels and guest houses that provide services for something between $10 and $15, for those on tight budgets or on a mission to experience community living, there are hostels and dormitories that come for as much as $ 5 a night.

Apartments

Furnished or unfurnished apartments are also on offer in major cities. While apartments are available inside some hotels, some locals also rent their residential flats. Some of the furnished ones are available for minimum a week. Often, they are rented for months or longer. Although prices vary from place to place, the cheapest ones start at around $ 300 a month.

Homestays

Homestay is yet another option, whether in cities or villages. The choice often presents the person with the opportunity to live with a local and experience the local way of things from a close proximity. The accommodation often requires sharing the kitchen, a meal or two, and the bathroom.

Teahouses

Many of the trekking routes in Nepal offer Teahouses to facilitate travellers. These are basically guest houses with rooms and dormitories that also serve food and drinks. En route in many treks, this form of accommodation is the only option.

Camping

When travelling into some of the remote areas in Nepal, the only option available can be camping. In other parts, some resorts do render such services for those wishing to spend just a day or two sleeping inside a tent next to a river.

Meals

For most tongues from outside South Asia, the local meals at the local joints will come as a fiery surprise. The Nepalese also love the sour tastes. In cities as well as the trekking routes, however, there are plenty of restaurants that go slow on the spices to match the tolerance of foreigners when serving local cuisine. The following are the ones that are must tries at least once.

  • Dhal-Bhat-Tarkari
  • Momos
  • Some Newari dishes – Chatamari, Bara, Chyoala or Chiura-Aloo
  • Gundruk Soup, SukutiSandeko, Hyakula Fry, ChanaAloo, or Roti Tarkari

Besides the local menu, the restaurants in cities also serve a wide variety of dishes from around the globe. One or the other should definitely appeal to everyone’s appetite.

When walking in the mountains, Dal-Bhat is always on the menu. The others popular among foreign visitors are the pancakes, Sherpa Stew, and the vegetable noodles.
