Gosainkuna A Holy Lake Trekking

Where great religious festival and events take place at holy Gosainkunda Lake once a year in the auspicious month of August, during wet monsoon season as per Hindu Lunar calendar, thousands of pilgrims visit this holy and glacial lake for a dip and bathe, belief is that relinquish the sin of hundred lifetimes where Hindu pilgrims come to change their holy threads also.

The great event dedicated to Lord Shiva one of the main gods of Hindu mythology and religion, where Lord Shiva created many ponds around this lovely spot to dilute-lethal poison from his body where he drank to save the world from evils.

Starting Gosainkunda Lake Trekking heading North of Kathmandu to reach at cooler hill town at Dhunche, where Langtang National Park begins (the first ever established park in the mountainous area of Nepal). Dhunche the headquarter town of Rasuwa district of Langtang Himal region.

From here heading higher with a climb into the cool shade of rhododendron-pines and oaks tree forest to reach Chandanbari or Sing Gompa, where walk leads further up as tree lines turns into smaller bushes at the higher area around Gosainkund Lake.

At Gosainkunda Lake enjoy marvelous time and hike with fabulous views of snowcapped of Manaslu and Ganesh Himal towards the west with Langtang and Jugal Himal towards north and east directions.

After a glorious moment at holy Gosainkund Lake, walk leads towards the high point of the trekking crossing over Lauribina-la or Gosainkund pass above 4,610 m / 15,124 ft high to reach around near Helambu area and back into woodland.

As Gosainkunda Lake Trekking progress walking past lovely villages of Kutumsang and Gul-Bhanjyang within Tamang-Sherpa and Hyalmo country bounded by Buddhist religions and rich culture, where walk leads with scenic views of ups and down to reach the wonderful high ridge of Chisapani where you can catch stunning sunrise over the chain of Himalayan peaks.

From Chisapani on the road to Kathmandu with long descend to reach Sundarijal town, located northeast from the city of Kathmandu where short drive brings you back to your hotel in Kathmandu, after a mesmerizing experience and exciting adventure on Gosainkund Lake Trekking.

Detail Itinerary

A Detail Itinerary to reach Holy Gosainkunda

Day 01: Drive to Dhunche town 1,950 - 06 hrs.
Morning an exciting drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche heading on Himalayan foothills then reaching Trisuli Bazaar a warm sub-tropical area, from here journey continues uphill on long winding road to reach cooler area past many farm villages and then at Dhunche town, at the height of 1,950 m.

Dhunche a headquarter town of Rasuwa district within Langtang Himal where Langtang National Park starts.

Day 02: Trek to Chandanbari (3,330m/10,925 ft) 4/5 hrs. 
First day walk from Dhunche starts on winding trail through terraced farm fields and villages, and then from a Riverside where climb begins into lovely coniferous forest filled with tall rhododendron-magnolia-oaks-pines and fir tree lines, walking past cattle herders shelters within grazing pastures.

Climb continues to reach on top of ridge at Chandanbari also called Sing Gompa, as this place at one time covered within sandal wood tree as the name Chandanbari, here after checking into a nice lodge, afternoon free and visit small cheese factory and old monastery located on top of the village.

Day 03: Trek to Gosainkund Lake (4,200m/13,779ft)- 4/5 hrs.
Walk today offers grand views of snow peaks with Langtang towards north includes Ganesh-Himal, Manaslu peaks as far to Annapurna range, as walk leads on gradual up for an hour to enter alpine woodland.

After few stops continue with climb on leaving tree line behind for short dwarf rhododendron, juniper and alpine shrubs bushes, as path unwinds uphill past few teahouses at Laurabina, where pilgrims leaves their walking stick here so the name ‘Laurabina’.

From here short descend and then up reaching first Saraswati and Bhairab kund after a small climb heading to our overnight stop at Gosainkund near its pristine pond. Here you can see notice traces left behind by pilgrims.

Day 04: Visit around Gosainkund (4,200 m/13,779 ft) - 4/5 hrs.      
At Gosainkund a free day for short hike around holy glacial pond, Gosainkund one of  the important sacred pilgrimage place, where great festival observed every year at Janai Purnima (Full Moon) in the month of August, the exact dates as per Hindu Lunar calendar, where mass numbers of Hindu and Buddhists pilgrims throng the lake for a holy bathe.
According to popular belief, the huge rock at the center of the lake remains a Shiva temple.

Day 05: Trek to Gopte (3,430 m/11, 253 ft) via Lauribina-la Pass (4,610 m / 15,124 ft) -06 hrs.
From Gosainkund a gradual walk on a small path by the pond, and then climb near a small creek in between rocks and boulders, as walk leads close to small pond of Surjakund, where climb leads up at Lauribini-la or Gosainkund pass the highest spot of the adventure.

After the top, long descend to Phedi (bottom) at 3,694 m with few teahouses, possible lunch stop and then journey continues east towards Helambu region and back into green vegetations of junipers, rhododendron to reach at Ghopte (meaning overhanging rocks) for overnight stop.

Day 06: Trek to Kutumsang (2,470 m / 8,103 ft) 4/5 hrs. 
After walking around in wilderness, from here trails joins of Helambu and Kathmandu routes; as trek takes you into forest for an hour then uphill to reach at Tharepati above 3,597m high, a nice spot situated on a ridge overlooking views of peaks with Jugal Himal range and Ganesh-Manaslu towards west.

From here descent to Mange Ghot, a nice place with grassy field, from here walking back into farm fields to reach at Kutumsang for overnight stop, a nice farm village of Sherpa, Hyalmo and Tamang hill tribes.

Day 07: Trek to Chisapani (2,165 m / 7,103 ft) 4/5 hrs. 
Today a long walk to reach at Chisapani, as morning leads on winding path with few ups and downhill past many farm areas and villages to reach at Gul-Bhanjyang located on a ridge top.

After a refreshing break walk continue on nice and pleasant trail past farm villages to reach at a nice Pati Bhanjayang village, from here short climb to our last overnight stop at Chisapani, a nice and scenic small village close to northern hill of Kathmandu Valley rim.

A picturesque spot rewards you with stunning sunrise views over range of peaks from Jugal Himal range towards north east and Ganesh Himal-Manaslu and Annapurna range towards west.

Day 08: Trek to Sundarijal and drive to Kathmandu (1,300m / 4,265 ft) 4/5 hrs.             
Last day of the wonderful Gosainkund Lake Trekking as morning walk takes you into lovely forest and farmlands after few hours of gradual walk heading to a ridge top at Burlang and Chepu Bhanjyang with great views of Kathmandu Valley, from here descend to Sundarijal (meaning beautiful water) a lovely spot with cool patch of forest with monkeys and fresh streams.

Sundarijal, a small farm town from here drive back to Kathmandu after an enjoyable and great moment on Gosainkund Lake Trekking, as drive leads past Jhorpati and Bouddhanath following within busy city road for some times and then back to your hotel in Kathmandu.
