Tsum Valley Trekking begins with an exciting drive from Kathmandu to reach Nepal Mid-West around Gorkha district, where the walk takes on main Manaslu Circuit Trek trail for some days, then heading towards off the beaten tracks away from the main route to reach our main destination at Mu-Gumpa and its nice sleepy villages enriched with age-old Buddhist culture and custom.
Where walk leads from low sub-tropic climate to alpine cooler hills within green lush woodland and then into barren, arid landscapes around high and beautiful Tsum Valley. Detail Itinerary
Day 01: Drive to Soti-Khola 700m/2,296 ft - 06/7 hrs.
Morning an interesting overland journey to reach Nepal Mid-West heading through Dhading areas to reach at Gorkha district within warm sub-tropic farm areas at Arughat town. From here transfer into the local vehicle, where drive follows Buri-Gandaki River on the winding road to reach at Soti-Khola a moderate size farm village for the first overnight stop of the adventure to Tsum Valley.
Day 02: Trek to Machhi-Khola 869 m/2,851 ft - 04/5hrs.
Our first day walk begins heading into forest past smaller farm villages to reach a wide valley near tributary stream that joins with Burigandaki River, on walks with lovely views of cultivated terrace of Lapbesi a village on mid-hills, as our route descends to a wide, sandy riverbed following a path that meanders below a steep, craggy valley side. As the walk continues to climb higher up to reach our overnight stop at Machhi-Khola, a fair size farm village having a number of teashops and simple lodge where Macchi-Khola means ‘Fish Stream’.
Day 03: Trek to Jagat 1,340m/4,396 ft- 04/5 hrs.
From here onward encountering many interesting farm villages and cultivated field, as morning walk lead to cross a stream where, and then walk upstream towards Khola-Bensi village with Tatopani a place with natural 'hot spring'. As walk progress then the wide valley narrows and gets steeper, where our path switches to the left bank of the river and then crossing a suspension bridge, after a short period of walk entering a patch of forest to reach Doban located on the high shelf of Burigandaki River. From climb on high trails and then into an open valley of Yara Khola, where walk continues for another few hours to reach Jagat village, a lovely farm moderate size village with mix tribe of people with Magar, Gurung, Chettries, Brahman, Manaslu Bhotia (Tibetan looking tribes) and some Newar people as shopkeepers.
Day 04: Trek to Lokpa 2,240m/7,349 ft - 04/5hrs.
From Jagat morning walks on stone steps to a river, where path climb over terraced hillsides to Saguleri, facing views of Sringi Himal at above 7,187 m high, as the walk continues with ups and downs and crossing over Buri-Gandaki. After the bridge path winds up to Philim village a place with nice and rich cultivated fields. Enjoying refreshing stop the heading higher to reach a rocky ridge covered with the bamboo forest at Eklai Bhatti, from here our route diverts toward North East to reach at Lokpa for an overnight stop in this small village of Tibetan culture and way of life.
Day 05: Trek to Chhokang-Paro 3,031m/ 9,944 ft -05 hrs.
From here onward enter the new fresh country and away from main trekking trails of Manaslu as walk leads towards Tsum in the valley of happiness. Walk further past farmlands and smaller villages facing views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal, as walk ends on reaching a nice village at Chumling for overnight halt.
Day 06: Trek to Nyle 3,347m/10,980ft - 05 hrs.
From here onward walk leads within Tsum valley, as morning lead towards highest areas to Nyle village around open and exposed wide valley, a dramatic dry and windswept terrain with similar landscapes like Tibet plateau. Entering into a country where tree lines fade for short juniper and willow trees, as the journey continues overlooking views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal range of peaks. Finally completing our day-walk reaching Nyle village where you can explore a meditation cave of great Buddhist saint ‘Guru Milereppa’ of 11th century, he was a poet, singer and a high tantric guru where his folk stories and words of wisdom with songs are still remembered by Tibetans and followers of Milarepa.
Day 07: Trek to Mu Gumpa 3,700m/12,139 ft -04hrs.
Today a short walk to reach at the end our trip at Tsum Valley reaching Mu Gumpa, with an old impressive monastery, walk leads to a climb within high, dry exposed terrain with views of high peaks then slowly walk ends on reaching at Mu Gumpa for the overnight stop.
Day 08: Mu-Gumpa with Rest Day to explore around.
A complete rest day where you can enjoy walking and exploring around the country, where only a few trekkers often venture this scenic and beautiful areas of Tsum Valley, witness its traditional village with the impressive ancient monastery of Mu Gumpa, enriched with treasures of antique idols, statue, and religious relics.
Day 09: Trek to Rachen-Gumpa 3,240m/10,629 ft- 05 hrs.
After an interesting and exciting moment around high Tsum valley, walk heads to visit Rachen Gumpa, as walk follows on the gradual trail with short few ups and downs with the panorama of snow-capped peaks, heading into yak grazing summer pasture to reach Rachen Gompa and its moderate size village for an overnight stop.
Day 10: Trek to Chumling 2,386 m/ 7,828 ft -05hrs.
Return journey having a wonderful time at high Tsum valley, where walk leads towards lower areas to Chumling where our route gets back into tall tree lines within green vegetation at Chumling village, for last and final overnight in Tsum Valley area.
Day 11: Trek to Jagat 1,340m/4,396 ft - 05/6 hrs.
From here retrace the journey back to Lokpa to join the main Manaslu trekking trail, as walk leads further down leaving behind Tsum valley, as walk leads further south direction to reach at warmer farm village at Philim, and then at Jagat village for an overnight stop.
Day 12: Trek to Soti-Khola 700m/2,296 ft- 05/ 6hrs.
After a lovely overnight at Jagat village, where morning walk leads following Burigandaki river downstream, with long descend to reach the low sub-tropical area around Tatopani, a village with natural fresh hot-spring. Here enjoy refreshing moments on natural hot-spring with time to explore around the farm villages. From Tatopani, with refreshing time our last day continues to the near level trail following the raging river downstream encountering many farm villages and into the patch of a forest of oaks and Sal trees to reach our last overnight stop and then ending the walk at Soti-Khola village.
Day 13: Drive Back to Kathmandu 1,300 m/4,265ft or Pokhara 860/2,821ft-06/7 hrs.
Enjoying amazing time on high Tsum Valley and around nice lovely farm village on route, morning board on a vehicle for the drive back to Kathmandu on the same exciting route, for people with interest can take a drive to scenic Pokhara.
