Obtaining a visa

It’s certainly not wise to travel without a visa to any country. For most nationalities visiting Nepal, however, this is not a concern. For a fee, they can obtain a tourist visa for 15, 30 or 90 days on arrivaleither via air at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu or by land at border-entry points: Kakadvita,Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj andGaddachowki when entering from India and Rasuwagadhi from China.It is also possible for a person to obtain a visa from outside Nepal. All that is required is to apply for one at a Nepali Embassy or a Diplomatic Mission nearby since they have the authority to issue one.

Indian Nationals visiting Nepal do not require a visa, but need to produce one’s passport or election commission card if entering by air.

Nationals from South Asian nations – Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives – receive a Gratis (free) visa for 30 days on arrival. This is for one entry in one calendar year.

Chinese Nationals are also eligible for the Gratis visa, but not on arrival. They need to obtain one from one of the following Nepali missions in China.

  • Embassy of Nepal in Beijing
  • Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa
  • Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong
  • Honorary Consulate of Nepal in Shanghai

Nationals from the followingnations are not entertained a visa on arrival. They need to get one from Nepali Embassies or Diplomatic Missions in their own countries. This list includes Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Liberia, Palestine and Somalia.

Single entry and multiple entry

With side trips arranged for Bhutan, Tibet or India, some travelers prefer a multiple entry visa.

Fees and requirements

Current visa fees for different duration are as follows.

  • 15-day multiple entry – $ 25 or equivalent ??
  • 30-daymultiple entry – $ 40 or equivalent ??
  • 90-daymultiple entry – $ 100 or equivalent

The visa fee is payable in the following foreign currencies only: Euros, Sterling Pounds, Swiss Franc, US dollars, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Singaporean dollar and Japanese Yen.(some entry-points via land insist on US dollars)

The documents required for obtaining a visa includes the following.

  • A valid passport with a validity of at least six months and a free page for the visa
  • A passport-size photo with a light background
  • An application form filled with the details, either online or at the spot (Online form is available at http://online.nepalimmigration.gov.np/tourist-visa. The process, which requires uploading a digital photo, is valid only if completed and submitted less than 15 days prior to one’s arrival.)

Children under ten need a visa but visa fee is exempted.

Extensions

A tourist visa can be extendedup to amaximum of 150 days, but is possible only from the immigration offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The process requires filling in an application form beforehand and then going to the immigration office in person with a valid passport and a passport-size photo (see requirements).

Visa extension fee for 15 or less days is $ 30. Additional days cost $ 2 per day.

Overstays

For those who overstay, there is a fine of $ 3 per day payable at the airport for less than 30 days plus $ 2 per day visa extension fee.
