Many of the cities have changed their names due to some reason. More than 100 cities and towns renamed themselves after Indian Independence in 1947. Gurgaon to Gurugram

The town was renamed as Gurugram from Gurgaon in 2016, which is a corporate hub of Haryana. Its name was derived from Guru Dronacharya who was the master of archery in Mahabharata and taught the Pandavas and Kauravas the archery tactics. According to the sources, the village was given as “gurudakshina” to him by Pandavas and hence the name tiled as Gugu-Gram.

Bangalore to Bengaluru

Bangalore, the IT hub of India was renamed Bengaluru in 2006. In 890 CE, a war took place in Begur as per the Western Ganga dynasty inscription and Bengaluru was the part of the battle. The city was named as ‘Bengaval-uru’ until it was a part of the Ganga Kingdom. 

Bombay to Mumbai

Bombay, the City of Dreams was renamed as Mumbai in 1996. The name Mumbai is a perfect amalgamation of two words i.e. Mumba (Maha Amba) and Aayi or ‘mother’ in Marathi. However, Mumbai is also named by some other names like Mayanagri, Boon Bay, Bombain, Mombaim, etc.

Madras to Chennai

The name Madras was derived from the term ‘Madraspattinam’, a fishing village in current Chennai.  It became Chennai in 1996 and there are multiple explanations for this. Some say that it was named after the Chenna Kesaba Perumal temple, and others believe that the name comes after Telugu ruler Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu. 

Cochin to Kochi

Kochi was popular for its trading of spices and also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. The name Kochi is derived from the Malayalam word ‘Kochu azhi’, means a small lagoon. Kochi and Cochin are the same. Britishers used to call it Kochi and Keralites used to call it Kochi. The Airport of Kochi is widely known as Cochin International Airport. 

Calcutta to Kolkata

The Calcutta city was named as Kolkata in 2001. Its name was derived from the term ‘Kolikata’ which is the name of three villages predating the British rule in India. Kolkata was called by Bengalis, and Calcutta by Britishers. 

Pondicherry to Puducherry

Pondicherry has many historical places that are known for remnants of French heritage with Indian culture. It gives great joy to the tourists who visit this city. The original name of the territory was Putucceri, that was originated from the Tamil words Putu, and Ceri means new village. Later on, the French corrupted this to Pondichrery. Pondicherry was changed to Puducherry in 2006 by territory.  

Mangalore to Mangaluru

Mangalore is referred Kodiyal in Konkani, while in Malayalam, it is referred as Mangalarapuram. It was named Mangaluru by Karnataka government in 2014. However, it is also known as Kudla and Maikala in different languages.
