The Everest Region trekking is home to many of those towering elevations festooned in snow and ice, including the highest of them all, Mt Everest. Of the fourteen peaks in our planet that have been pushed upwards beyond 8000 metres, three happen to fall in this region: Mt Everest (8,848 m), Mt Lhotse (8,516 m) and Mt Cho Oyu (8,201 m). These three are certainly wonders. However, to perceive them as the only ones influential would be a mistake. The surreal Mt AmaDablam, the imposing Mt Nuptse or the soothing Mt Pumori; the inviting Island Peak and the Lobuche Peak or the teasing Mera Peak; the tranquil Gokyo Lakes or the mysterious Khumbu Glacier; all add to the energy one feels once in the terrain of the Everest Massif in the sanctuary called Sagarmatha National Park.
Besides the Himalayan massif, there are a number of other elements that many do find of interest in the Everest Region. The Himalayan settlements including Namché, Khumjung and Tyangboché as well as the monasteries, the chortens, the prayer boulders and the prayer flags; any one of them or a combination of some of them can trigger some investigation into the ways and beliefs of the locals. Similarly, the Himalayan Tahr and the goral, the Asiatic Black Bear, the Red Panda, the Snow Leopard along with the junipers, the firs, the blue pines, the bamboos, the rhododendrons in the lower altitudes and the mosses and lichens until the treeline; each of them has the potential to initiate a discussion or simply a contemplation into the ways of the wild.
No wonder, records remain evidence that the Everest Region trekking attracts visitors in tens of thousands each year. For some, their intent to summit the Everest or other high peaks in the area draws them to the land. For most, their motivation seems a trek to high altitudes, often above 5,000 m. For the latter, trek to the Everest Base Camp, Kalapather or Gokyo-Ri or crossing the Renjo-La Pass, Cho-La Pass and Kongma-La Pass appear to be the quest. Moreover, walking side by side those mule trains or that long file of Jopkyos (a cross between a yak and a cow) or yaks is an affair one can experience only in these highlands.
