An Adventurous Journey to reach Mt. Kanchenjunga base camps, probably the one and only high mountains where the adventure takes you to visit both base camps of high Mt. Kanchenjunga around North and South of the same single and massive mountain range.
Mt. Kanchenjunga towers high at 8,586 m and 28,169 ft as world’s third highest peaks and Nepal second high, first conquered by British Expedition on May 25th, 1955 led by late Sir George Band and his team of professional mountaineers.
Kanchenjunga’s actual name is Kanchendzonga comes from Tibetan origin language as mountain straddles between Nepal and Sikkim (a small north-east mountain state of India). Kanchenjunga or Kanchendzonga means a range of mountain with five jewels that refers to its five main groups of peaks which makes Kanchenjunga massif.
Mt. Kanchenjunga falls within far North-Eastern Nepal Himalaya at the end of the country within Taplejung district, a remote and wild area to visit where the journey takes more than three weeks of wonderful walks, includes overland journey and flight from Kathmandu.
The journey to Kanchenjunga base camps of adventurous walking grade due to its remoteness where tented camping equipment needs to carry along with foods, around Kanchenjunga wild and isolated area where few simple lodges are found, with camping most on this beautiful walking journey.
Several means of transportation to reach and start walking the journey to Kanchenjunga base camp taking a drive all the way to reach at Sukhetar or with a short scenic flight to land at the low tropical area of Nepal Far South East which is known as Terai-belt.
Then take a drive on the hilly road to reach cooler alpine hills past the nice town of Ilam famous for vast Tea-Garden and products, to reach at trekking point with two options either visit North Base Camp first and then towards South Base Camp.
Normally most trekkers use anti-clockwise direction visiting South Base Camp the original expedition route to reach the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga, like other main popular trekking destination of Nepal.
Journey to Kanchenjunga base camp is more adventurous due to its remote location and on off the beaten tracks walk that lead towards isolated farm villages and into the dense rain forest to high alpine cooler woodland filled with tall rhododendron, oaks, pines and fir tree lines.
The walk takes you to cross several streams with a steep tough climb to reach at Oktang south Kanchenjunga base camp above 4,730 m around a place of Ramche within the barren and arid region where tree lines disappear.
Visiting South Base Camp then cross over three smaller passes of Tsele-la and back into the forested area to reach on the other side of Kanchenjunga at the nice village of Ghunsa populated by Sherpa and Bhotia tribes interwoven with Buddhism religion and interesting cultures.
From Ghunsa village towards high and remote corners of eastern Nepal Himalaya to reach at North Kanchenjunga base camp in a place called as Pang-Pema on the highest spot of the adventure at 5,140 m high facing grand panorama of high peaks of Kanchenjunga with Mt. Jannu, Kabru peaks.
